The Art of Rivalry

The Boston Athenæum
Pulitzer Prize-winning art critic Sebastian Smee’s The Art of Rivalry was released in 2016. The book centered around four pairs of male artists—Manet and Degas, Picasso and Matisse, Pollock and de Kooning, Freud and Bacon—and their antagonizing friendships which spurred unique, creative achievements in the art world.

In honor of its release, The Boston Athenæum, one of the nation’s oldest independent libraries, hosted a special evening with the writer and comissioned high-quality invitations for the occassion.

Developed and designed in collaboration with Delane Meadows. The design pays homage to one of the book’s stories—an artist slashing the painting of a rival.
